Telecommunications and The Benefit of IT Proficiency

The industry that I am most familiar with currently is telecommunications. Many people immediately think of telephone service when they hear "telecommunications", but the truth is that it covers a wide variety of communication over wires. Over the past 20 years, the telecommunications industry has changed somewhat drastically. Much of what my company dealt with before the internet boom was providing video services over coaxial cable. Since the internet boom, cable internet has exploded and become the main focus of my company. As far as signal analysis and troubleshooting go, moving from television to internet made the inclusion of computers and information technology a necessity.

When providing internet to a home or business, the main reason they need to use it is for their computers, phones, or tablets have access to a steady connection. Because of this, many customers have questions about their computers connection to the internet. In addition, some customers do not fully understand the function of internet on their computers, and ask questions completely unrelated to their internet service. It is therefore necessary to have a good understanding of information technology and computers in general.

In addition to addressing customer concerns, a detailed understanding of information technology, the internet and office applications are very helpful in my workplace. Much of what we do is completed by using Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint, and Word. Going forward, because the world is turning more "digital" every day, the impact of hardware changes, operating systems, and networking will only increase. In regard to hardware changes, many people are upgrading to new things that connect to WiFi, such as lightbulbs, microwaves, and sprinkler systems. It will be necessary to have an understanding of how the devices work going forward. With operating systems, the changes may not be as impactful, but it is still important to fully grasp what the technology is capable of. Networking may have a significant impact overall, as much of the way internet is provided to homes is changing on almost a daily basis. New equipment for networking is certainly around the corner, and thus make the need for learning and adapting to it very important.
